Lyft is just one of those gifts that keep on giving. Not does Lyft live for providing a comfortable, safe, and affordable way to travel but they love to participate in charitable acts. Last time, Lyft partnered with Chance the Rapper in order to help out Chicago public schools, now Lyft is collaborating with Black Girls Code.
Black Girls Code is nonprofit organization dedicated to “increaseingthe number of women of color in the digital space by empowering girls of color ages 7 to 17 to become innovators in STEM fields, leaders in their communities, and builders of their own futures through exposure to computer science and technology.”
Kimberly Bryant, is the founder of Black Girls Code. Bryant, created this organization based on her own struggles to find someone in her classes that looked like her and happened to be interested in coding just as she was growing up. Bryant sat down with USA Today and spoke about her experience as well as the future of coding.
In similar way to Lyft’s collaboration with Chance the Rapper, riders are given the opportunity to pay both their fares and donate to the organization in this case- Black Girls Code. Lyft’s partnerships with various organizations is a part of their Round Up & Donate campaign.
“We want to introduce an organization that we really care about to the world and provide the public with the opportunity to participate,” said Tariq Meyers, Lyft’s head of inclusion and diversity.
USA Today reports that over the past eight months, Lyft rider have raised over $4 million for other organizations by turning on the feature that’s provided on the app, which rounds up each fare to the next dollar, donating the difference.
According to Tech Crunch, Bryant states that she thinks highly of driven organizations.
“Black Girls Code is a values-driven organization,” Bryant said in a statement. “We look very closely at prospective partners with that in mind and pay special attention to those that believe in the power of community to affect change. Through the work they’ve done over the years, we know Lyft embodies these same attributes and they share in our mission of coming together to provide young girls of color with the skills they need to be the innovators and leaders of tomorrow.”
