As the worlds best female athlete, Serena Williams shows why she is a winner on the court and off by becoming an ambassador for Allstate Purple Purse Foundation , a foundation that raises awareness on domestic violence.
The tennis star is now working with Purple Purse, to inform and stop domestic violence; while bringing awareness and serving as a source of refuge for victims. The goal of the organization is to
“… creating long-term safety and security for survivors through financial empowerment. We are making the invisible visible. Since 2005, we have been working to bring financial abuse out of the shadows so victims can get the healing and support they deserve. “
After a study, from Michigan State University, it was found that out of 100 domestic violence survivors, 99 also were experiencing financial abuse as well. Domestic violence, affects one in four women in her lifetime and can be physical, verbal, financial, mental, emotional or a combination of multiple attacks.
As domestic abuse becomes more prevalent, Williams is dedicated to bringing more awareness to the devastation. Almost 80% of Americans haven’t heard of financial abuse and are unaware of the problem, according to a survey conducted by Allstate.
“Standing up for women’s rights has long been a passion of mine …I am honored to join Allstate Foundation Purple Purse to bring financial abuse and domestic violence out of the shadows and into the public conversation. I hope people will join the #PurplePurse movement and work with us to end abuse against women.”- Serena Williams
